Mike couldn't believe the changes that had occurred. It seemed like he had just transferred to L.A. as a detective and now, here he was, ten years later as lead detective. Wow. Time's really flown, he thought to himself. He could hardly believe he was here. But he was and he was pretty excited about it. He sat at his desk, looking over some papers, trying to determine where to file them. That was the one thing he didn't particularly care for: more paperwork, but he wasn't about to complain.
As he put the papers in the pile that he had mentally marked as his "undetermined" pile, his gaze fell on a picture of him and his family and he let out a soft smile. It was the four of them: him, his parents, and his younger brother Richard. They were at some family function---he didn't really remember what---and they had been pulled aside for a photo. His fingers were clutched around the back of his younger brother's shirt collar, cause he had tried to run off just before the photo was taken.
Mike mentally shook his head and returned his attention to his work, determined to get it done before things got too hectic. Several minutes later, he leaned back in his chair with a sigh. I need a break, he thought to himself, rolling his shoulders, trying to work the kinks out. He looked around and smiled softly as he watched the other officers milling about.

Sienna had been working on her paperwork all morning and knew she wouldn’t be done with it, for at least another half hour. But, she didn’t really care. She liked it at the station and had luckily not been looked at like she was dirt or something, just because she was new. For a moment, she looked at the clock, then flexed her muscles and got up, while she walked out of her office and across the desks. When she passed Mike, she stopped and looked at him with a smile. ”I’m going to get some coffee, you look like you could use some, too, want me to grab a cup for you too?”
She knew he was lead detective now, but she wasn’t too worried, her cousin had married Daryl, who was chief of police now. That was something that had her worried her first day, that they all thought she had help getting in here, which wasn’t true at all. ”I know the coffee’s not the best in the world, the Starbucks on the corner is much better, but to walk there every time someone wants coffee is a little time consuming, too.” She joked, as she looked at him.

Mike watched as one of the newer detectives, Sienna, walked over. When she had first joined the force, he had done a check on her, and had discovered that she was related to Robert Lovelace, one of the older vampires in the city and that she seemed to possess some powers, though he didn't know what. What he had found had been vague, but that was okay. He wasn't interested in exposing her, he had just been curious, especially since he had found out that she was related to Daryl's wife. Of course, he knew enough not to pry. After all, people were entitled to their privacy and he wasn't going to go snooping where he didn't belong. "Yeah, coffee would be great, thanks," he answered in response to her question. When she went on to say that their coffee wasn't the best, he chuckled. "You're not kidding. I think it's like an unwritten law: work as a cop, you gotta have bad coffee," he responded. "In fact, the only person I knew who could make a decent cup of coffee was back in New York in my old unit," he told her. And he could never figure out how he did it, which had driven him nuts.
He shrugged his shoulders, once again trying to work out the kinks. "Listen, I know you're related to Robert Lovelace and that your cousin married Daryl, so a lot of people might think that you didn't get your job on merit," he began. "Let me tell you right now, I don't believe it and I won't put up with crap from anyone, so if people start bothering you besides the usual rookie hazing or if that gets out of line, feel free to come to me, okay?" he told her, his tone serious. If there was one thing he wasn't going to stand for it was his officers being bothered.
