Witches
Witches as a species have existed since the dawn of time. Far from the hook nosed terrors of stage and screen most people who are in fact, witches look like every other human being on the planet. They come from all backgrounds and economic standings because magic, is called to certain people not their social standing. Many humans in L.A. bump into witches every day of their lives and never even notice. They can be that barista you get your non-fat breve latte from every morning or even the owner of a totally rockin' night club.
Most witches have access to magic to a greater or lesser extent depending on their ability and focus. Non witches CAN whield magic but it is much harder for them verses the innate ability that born witches have. While a witch can be a solo practitioner, to truely gain in power and control requires a circle of five. Once that five have been found they can then bind their circle to keep their powers under control. The drawback to this is the lessening of personal power but at the exchange of a chance to do bigger things due to having the power of five to tap into.
Witches also gain the power of telekinesis when they have reached a certain level of skill and may develop telepathy and empathy with members of the family or circle depending on if the family they are born to are witches or not.
The Lovelace Coven is truly unique in that their magics manifest in ways that are uncommon. Still further one of their practitioners is deaf and so the gifts given to this family were slightly different than what most witches would receive. This has not come without a cost as tragedy seems to haunt the Lovelaces and many beings have tried to break their power.
